Payal Rohatgi is new defence minister; talks about Rafale Deal

The Rafale deal controversy has been in the news for several months now, and there have been different opinions from the government to the opposition having their takes on what the deal actually is.

However, now, it looks like Bigg Boss season 7 fame Payal Rohatgi has answers to all these questions! The actress has turned advocate to BJP and has diligently analysed the whole deal.

In an attempt to clear every doubt, Payal herself took the efforts of brutally going through the terms and conditions of the entire deal, and has produced a video for the audience.

In the video, Payal Rohatgi first explains the Rafale deal in great depth (Well…), analyses it word by word and gives thumbs up to what the present government has done for the country, and in fact expresses bewilderment on the issues the opposition is raising.

For the uninitiated, India and France signed the Euro 7.87-billion (Rs 59,000 crore approx) deal for Rafale fighter jets, equipped with latest missiles and weapon system besides multiple India-specific modifications that will give the IAF greater “potency” over arch rival Pakistan.

The Inter Governmental Agreement was signed by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and his visiting French counterpart Jean Yves Le Drian 16-months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s plans to buy 36 Rafale fighter aircraft in fly away condition during his trip to France.

However, the Congress has been accusing massive irregularities in the deal, alleging that the government was procuring each aircraft at a cost of over Rs 1,670 crore as against Rs 526 crore finalised by the UPA government. The party has also demanded answers from the government on why state-run aerospace major HAL was not involved in the deal.

The Centre has refused to share the details, citing a secrecy clause of a 2008 pact between India and France.
